Pope Visits The US - Lessons For Your Marketing

April 18, 2008

The pope is in town, and as Seth Godin says in his blog at http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/2123/28176416, he probably won’t be stopping by your business. Seth says, tongue in cheek, that you can give away that special table you were holding for the Holy Father, or instead, you may want to give it to one of your customers.

I think he makes an excellent point. We frequently expend huge quantities of our time and effort to cater to visiting VIP’s whom we don’t even know and who have never done anything for us, while we ignore our customers who patronize our businesses and whose business benfits us every single day.

It makes total sense to treat your customers like visiting dignitaries and make them feel a little bit papal from time to time. That can be through a note or letter just saying thank you, or better still a gift that they will value.

Remember, we usually spend way more time marketing to people who have never done business with us than we do marketing to the people who are already doing business with us. It generally costs far more to capture a new customer than to recapture an old one.

So, why not reach out today and extend a little papal regalia to your existing customers!
